20" Handmade Navajo Pearl Necklace (+ Earrings) by Virginia Tso - Classic Navajo Pearls, but handmade, not machined, made by famous esteemed artist and silversmith Virginia Tso. The necklace is made from a variety of fluted graduated beads, varying in size from 6 to 12mm. The earrings are 10mm and fluted, on French wire, and are 1” long. A crowning addition for your collection, and they are sure to mix and match with other necklaces and native jewelry very well. It is a set: earrings come with the necklace, something Virginia always does with her work. Bracelet that matches is shown but is sold separately, not as part of the set.
Native American jewelry began not as ornamentation, but as strong symbol and story of the various nations'peoples. The fact that they are beautiful has drawn other peoples of North America to admire, emulate, and collect these finely made pieces. ABOUT VIRGINIA TSO: For Virginia, bead-making is a family tradition for many generations: Virginia learned silversmithing from her paternal grandmother, Helen, who lived to the age of 108! Helen learned from her father, Sam Silversmith. He was given this name because he was so highly respected and esteemed by the community. Virginia and husband Morris took what they learned and added their own creativity, making beads in all styles, shapes and sizes... round beads, flat beads, melon beads, fluted beads, and saucer beads strung in many different lengths and endless combinations. The process involves melting down scrap silver, rolling it into sheets, cutting out the rough shapes, doming each bead, stamping or shaping, punching the hole, soldering each half together, filing and buffing to a shiny finish or oxidizing to a soft satin patina. This is the traditional way of making handmade beads. Virginia is one of the few Navajo silversmiths who still makes her sterling silver beads completely by hand.
